The Story of Renacare

In early 2020, as the world was brought to its knees by the COVID-19 pandemic, a silent crisis unfolded behind hospital doors and in the homes of thousands of patients: dialysis access was breaking down. Hospitals were overwhelmed, movement was restricted, and many private dialysis centers had shut their doors out of fear, confusion, or lack of preparedness. For patients with kidney failure, dialysis is not optional—it is life-sustaining. Yet, in those harrowing months, we as nephrologists witnessed the unimaginable: patients missing sessions, deteriorating rapidly, some even dying—not from COVID, but from not getting dialysis on time.

That was our wake-up call.

As front-line nephrologists, we were not just clinicians we were witnesses to a system that had failed its most vulnerable. Amid the chaos, a question echoed within us

From Crisis to Commitment

What began as an urgent solution to a life-threatening gap evolved into a mission. Renacare Center for Kidney Disease and Research Pvt. Ltd was founded by a collective of nephrologists—not businessmen or investors—who believed that kidney patients in India deserve more: more clinical oversight, more dignity, and more safety. We didn’t set out to create just another dialysis chain. We set out to create a new standard. One that puts nephrologists—not profit margins—at the center of care.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, dialysis access in India collapsed as overwhelmed hospitals, restricted movement, and closed centers left patients unable to receive the life-sustaining treatment they needed. Front-line nephrologists witnessed the devastating consequences – patients missing sessions, deteriorating rapidly, and in some cases dying – not from the virus itself but from lack of timely dialysis. Faced with this crisis, a group of committed kidney specialists asked, “If not us, then who?” and founded RenaCare Center for Kidney Disease and Research Pvt. Ltd®.

Guided by principles of ethical, protocol-driven care that place nephrologists at the heart of treatment, they set out not merely to create another dialysis chain but to establish a new standard of clinical oversight, dignity, and safety for kidney patients across India. In response to the pandemic’s challenges, Renacare also pioneered a Home Hemodialysis programme, bringing hospital-grade care into patients’ homes to ensure safety, flexibility, and ongoing specialist supervision.
