Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is a focused form of plasmapheresis where the plasma carrying disease-causing antibodies, immune complexes or abnormal proteins is removed and replaced with fresh plasma or albumin. This gives the immune system a reset and stops the ongoing damage in conditions where the body is, in effect, attacking itself. TPE is most effective when started early in the disease — sometimes within hours of diagnosis.

TPE is a type of plasmapheresis specifically focused on therapeutic replacement — taking out diseased plasma and replacing it with fresh plasma or albumin. Plasmapheresis is the broader term and can include just filtering plasma without large-volume replacement.
For Guillain-Barré or myasthenic crisis, improvement often begins after 2-3 sessions. For kidney conditions like anti-GBM, the goal is to stop further damage — improvement is judged by stable kidney function, not always by feeling better immediately.
Most health insurers cover TPE when there is a documented clinical indication. We share the diagnosis, doctor's notes and itemised invoices so you can pre-authorise. For cashless cases we coordinate directly with the TPA.
