Image-guided kidney biopsy procedure
Real Renacare care. Image-guided kidney biopsy procedure.
Diagnostic procedure

An ultrasound-guided biopsy that decides what comes next.

A 20-minute procedure that tells us, at a cellular level, exactly which kidney disease you have — and how to treat it.

What it is

The treatment, in plain language.

A kidney biopsy takes a small sample of kidney tissue with a fine needle, guided by ultrasound. A pathologist then examines it under a microscope. For many kidney diseases — protein in urine, unexplained kidney function drop, suspected lupus or glomerulonephritis, declining transplant function — this is the only test that gives a definitive answer. Without a biopsy, treatment is often a guess; with one, it is targeted.

Who it's for

Is this the right treatment for you?

  • If you have unexplained protein or blood in your urine.
  • If your kidney function has dropped and the cause is unclear.
  • If you have suspected lupus nephritis, IgA nephropathy or vasculitis.
  • If you have a transplanted kidney whose function is declining.
  • If you need a biopsy to choose between immunosuppression and conservative care.
How Renacare does it

Our standard, not the industry standard.

Pre-procedure workup

Coagulation profile, blood pressure check, ultrasound of both kidneys, medication review (we pause blood thinners on a clear schedule).

Real-time ultrasound guidance

The nephrologist sees the needle on screen throughout — accurate sample, lower bleeding risk.

Senior operator only

Biopsies are performed by senior nephrologists who do this routinely, not by trainees on rotation.

Pathology partnership

Samples go to a renal pathology lab; written report typically reaches you in 5-7 days.

What to expect on your first visit

From OPD to discharge.

  1. Arrive fasting in the morning; coagulation labs done.
  2. Procedure under local anaesthetic, 20-30 minutes.
  3. Rest flat for 6 hours under nursing observation.
  4. Discharged the same evening with a written care sheet.
  5. Provisional report 3-4 days, full renal pathology in 5-7 days.

Clinical detail

What is a Kidney Biopsy?

A kidney biopsy involves taking a very small sample of kidney tissue using a thin needle. This tissue is then examined under a microscope by expert pathologists to understand the underlying kidney condition at a microscopic level.

Clinical detail

At Renacare, the biopsy is performed by experienced nephrologists under sterile conditions:

Ultrasound guidance is used to precisely locate the kidney.

Local anaesthesia is administered to numb the biopsy area — the procedure is usually not painful.

A special needle is used to collect a tiny sample of kidney tissue.

The procedure itself takes 10–15 minutes, followed by post-procedure observation.

What to Expect After the Biopsy

Mild soreness at the biopsy site is normal.

Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or exercise for 3–5 days.

Biopsy results are typically ready within 3–5 days, depending on the complexity of findings.

FAQ

Questions patients ask before they decide.

The site is numbed with local anaesthetic, so the needle itself is not painful — you feel pressure and a quick thump. Some patients have a dull ache at the site for a day or two afterward, controlled with paracetamol. Sharper pain is uncommon and we ask you to report it.

The main risk is bleeding. Mild bleeding (a little blood in urine for a day) happens in about 1 in 10. Bleeding needing transfusion is rare (under 1%). Real-time ultrasound, coagulation checks and 6-hour observation are how we keep it that low.

Provisional findings within 3-4 days; the full written renal pathology report in 5-7 days. We schedule a follow-up consultation to walk you through the diagnosis, what it means, and the treatment plan in plain language.
