Catheters placed by nephrologists, not borrowed from another team.
Permcath, temporary HD catheters and PD catheters — inserted under ultrasound, in a sterile setup, by the doctor managing your dialysis.
The treatment, in plain language.
A dialysis catheter is a soft tube that gives the dialysis machine access to your bloodstream (for hemodialysis) or to your abdominal cavity (for peritoneal dialysis). There are three common types: a Permcath (tunneled, long-term), a temporary HD catheter (short-term, urgent dialysis) and a PD catheter (for home peritoneal dialysis). The right one depends on how long you need dialysis, the state of your veins, and whether you want to dialyse at home.
Is this the right treatment for you?
- If you need urgent dialysis and don't yet have a fistula.
- If your fistula is still maturing and you need a bridge access.
- If your veins are not suitable for a fistula and a Permcath is the long-term plan.
- If you are starting peritoneal dialysis at home and need a PD catheter.
- If your existing catheter is infected, blocked or displaced.
Our standard, not the industry standard.
Ultrasound-guided insertion
Real-time imaging guides the needle into the right vein on the first attempt — no blind sticks.
Sterile, single-use setup
Drape, gown, tray and equipment are all single-use; the procedure room is treated like a minor OT.
Same-day, day-care
Most insertions are done under local anaesthetic in 30-45 minutes; you go home the same evening.
Aftercare you can follow
Written dressing schedule, photos of "what good looks like", and a 48-hour follow-up call.
From OPD to discharge.
- Arrive fasting for 2-4 hours; pre-procedure check and consent.
- IV line placed, site (neck or chest) cleaned and draped.
- Local anaesthetic and ultrasound-guided insertion, 30-45 minutes.
- Chest X-ray to confirm catheter position.
- 1-2 hours rest, then home; catheter usable within 24 hours.
Transparent, written before you commit.

Questions patients ask before they decide.
A well-cared-for Permcath can stay for 6 months to several years. We aim to convert you to a fistula or transplant when possible, because long-term catheters carry higher infection risk than fistulas. Until then, strict dressing care keeps it safe.
Catheter-related bloodstream infection is the main risk. Renacare tracks infection rates monthly and follows international protocols on dressings, line locks and hand hygiene. If you notice fever, redness or pus at the site, call us before your next session — don't wait.
Yes, with a waterproof cover. We give you a reusable shower shield and demonstrate how to use it before discharge. Submerging in baths, pools or rivers is not allowed — it lets contaminated water track along the line.
Don't decide alone. Decide informed.
