What to Expect on Your First Dialysis Day — A Step-by-Step Patient Guide

Starting dialysis can feel overwhelming — unfamiliar machines, multiple tubes, hours-long sessions, and a long-term commitment. But once you know what to expect, dialysis becomes routine. Here’s a step-by-step walkthrough of your first dialysis day at Renacare.

Before You Arrive

  • Bring all current medications and prescriptions
  • Bring recent lab reports (KFT, CBC, electrolytes, viral markers)
  • Eat a light meal 1-2 hours before — avoid heavy or salty foods
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing with sleeves that roll up easily
  • Bring entertainment — phone charger, book, headphones for the 4-hour session
  • Bring a family member if you’d like company

Step 1 — Arrival and Pre-Session Check (15 min)

You’ll be welcomed at reception, weighed, BP measured, and your nephrologist will review your records. Any questions or concerns are addressed before you start.

Step 2 — Vascular Access Setup (10 min)

If you have an AV fistula, two needles are inserted into your arm. If you have a catheter, two ports are connected to the dialysis tubing. Numbing cream can be applied if needles bother you.

Step 3 — Dialysis Run (3-4 hours)

The machine slowly cleans your blood by removing waste and excess fluid. You’ll feel comfortable — most patients watch TV, sleep, work on their phones, or chat. Vital signs are monitored every 30 minutes. A nephrologist is available throughout.

Step 4 — Post-Session Recovery (15 min)

Needles are removed, pressure is held until bleeding stops. You’re weighed again to confirm fluid removal. You’ll receive recovery snacks (light food and water as advised). BP is rechecked before discharge.

What You Might Feel After Your First Session

  • Tiredness for the first few hours — normal as your body adjusts
  • Mild dizziness if too much fluid was removed — will improve with experience
  • Better energy over the next 24-48 hours as toxins clear
  • Slight muscle cramps — manageable with hydration and dietary tweaks

Schedule from Day 2 Onwards

Most patients dialyse 3 times a week (twice for some), 3-4 hours per session. Renacare offers flexible scheduling — morning, afternoon, evening slots — to fit your work and life routine.
